(KTVI) -?A stunning flip flop when I grill the Head of St. Louis School District for spending $300,000 on high priced lawyers. I learned the case might have settled for between $20,000 and $25,000.
At first Rick Sullivan the head of the Special Administrative Board said he and the District had no such opportunity but then backtracked after being hit with my facts.
?
The case involved a fight with former School Board President Veronica Obrien and her fight over the firing of then Vashon Basketball Coach Floyd Irons in 2006. ?Irons later went to federal prison on unrelated charges.
?
There were protests in front of Obriens house and she was later sued in connection with the Iron?s firing.
The School Board at the time said it would pay for Obriens lawyers to defend herself against the lawsuit.
But a new board came to power when the state took over the District. The head of that District Rick Sullivan reversed the earlier board and said the District wouldn?t foot Obriens legal bills and she was on her own.
Obrien sued Sullivan and the District over the decision not to pay here legal bills that were less than $25,000.
In the end the District ended up shelling out $300,000 on it?s lawyers to fight her when it may have sidestepped the fight and saved taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.
