1. Always have a plan of attack ? wasting time is wasting money.
2. Consider the layout and flow of your space.
3. Color can be your best friend or you biggest enemy?the right color can change the entire look and feel of a space.
4. Use low flow fixtures ? they make a difference.
5. Marble and Granite countertops are not your only choices. There are more alternative products on the market today than ever before?they give the same expensive look without the price tag.
6. Sweat the small stuff. Accents and accessories really complete a room, so take your time.
7. Plan on going over budget by 10%.
8. Good lighting can make all the difference. Add dimmer switches ? think about some of your favorite spaces and places and what they have in common ? lighting is key.
9. Hardwood flooring will last a lifetime and uses 20% less water than most flooring products to manufacture. Be Green when you can!
10. Know what you?re capable of and what a pro should do. It will cost more to re-do something.

Ivy Bridge-packing HP EliteBook gets reviewed, scores well in early tests

Image

Hear that? That, friends, is the sound of someone in Intel's PR department banging his head against a desk. Though we've read more than a few rumors about the company's forthcoming Ivy Bridge chips, Intel has steadfastly declined to share many official details, and has controlled the flow of information so tightly that laptop makers won't even use the words Ivy Bridge when talking about upcoming systems. (It's always "next-generation Intel Core processors," but we digress.) So it's a pleasant surprise, then, to see a review of an Ivy Bridge system before Intel even makes its official announcement. Laptop Reviews has apparently been testing a yet-to-be-announced HP EliteBook 8470p with an unspecified Core i7 processor, integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics, 8GB of RAM and an Intel 320 solid-state drive.

Though the testing team doesn't have much to say about battery life, the raw performance scores are quite impressive, surpassing those belonging to heavy hitters like the HP Envy 17 and Lenovo ThinkPad W520 workstation. Then again, Laptop Reviews is quick to admit that that SSD may have helped boost scores beyond what you'd see in an Ivy Bridge system with a good old-fashioned hard drive. On the graphics side, too, the spankin' new HD 4000 provides a nice (read: several-thousand-point) boost over systems running HD 3000, though we'll have to wait a little longer for real-world gaming tests, it seems. That's the abridged version, but we encourage you to hit up the source link for some more detailed remarks, along with comparisons to other systems.

Famous family trees: Anne Reid | findmypast blog

Welcome to the second in a new series of blogs which explores the family trees of the famous. Experienced family historian, Roy Stockdill, takes us on a journey through time as he investigates the family history of the famous, both living and dead. Roy?s second blog focuses on actress Anne Reid.

Had veteran actress Anne Reid, MBE, followed the inclinations of her family history, her thespian talents would have been lost to the world of theatre and television.

Anne Reid - image courtesy of the Telegraph

She might, however, have been a famous newspaper columnist instead. For Anne, who stars in the latest BBC TV series of Upstairs Downstairs as cook Mrs Thackeray, comes from a family closely connected with journalism and newspapers.

Anne?s grandfather, father, uncle and three brothers were all scribes and her grandmother sold advertising space. Anne, however, never seriously thought of following the family tradition, ?Though I?ve always enjoyed writing and have lots of stories at home?, she says.

Anne is also well known for her appearances with Victoria Wood, especially in the sitcom Dinnerladies, and with Maureen Lipman in the delightful Ladies of Letters. Veteran Coronation Street fans may remember her as Ken Barlow?s first wife, Valerie Tatlock.

Anne?s father, Colin Norman Reid, born in 1896 at Aston, Birmingham was a special correspondent in the Middle East for the Daily Telegraph. An uncle worked on the Manchester Evening News and her three older brothers, born in the 1920s, all worked in newspapers. The best-known was Colin Reid, a brilliantly witty writer for the Daily Mail whom I remember from my own Fleet Street days.

Anne was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1935, some nine years after the youngest of her brothers. ?I was a mistake? she jokes, ?but I think my parents were glad to have a girl after three boys.? Her parents, Colin Norman Reid and Annie Eliza Weetman, were married at Redcar on the rugged, windswept coast of North-East Yorkshire in 1920.

Anne?s mother, Annie Eliza, also born in 1896, was from Darlington in County Durham. When WWII broke out they moved from Newcastle back to Redcar. The family moved around quite a bit - Anne?s father was born at Aston, Birmingham but the Reids came from Liverpool and before that from Fife, Scotland.

In the 1911 census, Anne?s father Colin, then aged 14, was living with relatives of his mother called Latham at Smethwick, near Birmingham ? see their census return below:

Anne?s grandmother, Helena Latham, was born at West Derby, Liverpool in 1875 and married Thomas David Husband Reid, Anne?s grandfather, at Bolton, Lancashire, in 1894. Thomas, born in Liverpool in 1870, got his unusual middle name of Husband from his Scottish ancestors ? more on them later.

Thomas Reid appears to have been the first member of the family to write for newspapers and contributed a cycling column to the Bolton Evening News under the pseudonym of ?Pathfinder?. He also wrote for a cycling journal, the Northern Wheeler, published by the same company. The British Newspaper Archive contains a report of an accident he suffered in 1892 when his bicycle crashed into an unattended cart left across the road in the dark.

Thomas won a court case against the cart?s owner and was awarded ?14 damages with costs. He subsequently died tragically young in 1906 at only 36, as a result of a long-distance cycling trip. According to Anne, her grandfather caught pneumonia and died, leaving his wife Helena a widow at only 30.

This would probably explain why, in the 1911 census, Helena?s 14-year-old son Colin ? Anne?s father ? was living with his mother?s relatives in Smethwick while Helena herself is found in Middleborough as a boarder and working as a traveller for the North of England Newspaper Co:

I found an interesting entry in the 1901 census in Aston Manor, Birmingham, from which Anne?s grandfather, Thomas David Husband Reid, appears to be absent ? perhaps he was away on one of his long-distance rides!

The census sheet is somewhat curious, however, because it gives the impression that it was Thomas himself who completed the schedule. Helena Reid is shown as wife, four-year-old Colin Norman Reid as son, 68-year-old Mary Latham, Helena?s mother, as mother-in-law, and Ada Maud M Latham, 25, sister-in-law, but no head of household appears:

Maybe a tired enumerator made a mistake and forgot to copy into his book Thomas? name as head of the household ? it has been known! I was unable to find him elsewhere in 1901 but he was certainly still alive because he didn?t die until 1906.

Another interesting feature of this 1901 entry is that also in the household were two young male boarders, Frank Lloyd, 21, and Tom Gilson, 19, both of whom were footballers. I wondered whether they were playing for the famous Aston Villa club and, sure enough, I found both names online in an Aston Villa database.

Taking Anne?s ancestry back a further generation, I found her great-grandfather, also called Thomas Reid, in every census from 1871 to 1911, mostly in Liverpool. He worked for much of his life as a solicitor?s clerk.

I was initially stymied because in the censuses from 1871-1901, Thomas?s birthplace was shown merely as Scotland and, although I knew his birth year to be around 1833-5, there were far too many Thomas Reids of similar age born in Scotland to give me a prayer of identifying the right man!

Then came a breakthrough. I discovered Thomas Sr still alive in the 1911 census living at 3 Harrogate Street, Everton, Liverpool, aged 75. I felt sure this was the right man because Thomas was still a law clerk:

What was exciting was that Thomas had filled in the census himself ? the 1911 census is the first one in which we can see our ancestors? actual handwriting ? and recorded his birthplace as Logie in Fife in about 1836. The eagle-eyed among you will have spotted that Thomas had two widowed ladies of 70 looking after him, a housekeeper and a cleaning woman. When I told Anne this, she exclaimed: ?Good for him!?.

The GRO death indexes indicate that Thomas Reid Sr died at West Derby, Liverpool in 1915 aged 79, outliving his unfortunate son Thomas Jr by some nine years.

Armed with the knowledge that Thomas Reid Sr had been born at Logie, Fife, I found him in the 1841 census. The census revealed five-year-old Thomas and two siblings living with their maternal grandparents David and Isabella Husband, both 65, on a farm at Easter Forret, Logie:

I found Easter Forret on modern maps ? below is a picture of where David and Isabella lived.

Photo courtesy of Caroline Makein of Fife Rootsearch, St Andrews

Photo courtesy of Caroline Makein of Fife Rootsearch, St Andrews

It is a fairly remote place in the hills above Logie, about 10 miles from the famous resort of St Andrews.

I then found the birth of Thomas Reid in the old parish registers for Logie at ScotlandsPeople. He was born on 24 July 1835 and baptised on 21 August. The entry said he was the son of John Reid ?School master here? (i.e., at Logie) and Margaret Husband.

So John and Margaret Reid were the great-great-grandparents of Anne Reid and I also found their marriage on 28 November 1834 in the Logie old parish registers. John was again described as ?School master here? and Margaret as the daughter of David Husband, farmer, Easter Forret.

It now became clear where Anne?s grandfather, Thomas David Husband Reid, got his middle names from: his grandmother Margaret and great-grandfather.

My researches were still not exhausted, however, for I managed to find the birth and baptism of Margaret Husband at Kilmany, Fife, the adjacent parish to Logie, in November 1800. She was the daughter of David Husband and Isabel [sic] Heggie.

In the 1851 census, David Husband and his wife Isabella, now both 77, had moved to another farm at Kingbarns, Fife, closer to St Andrews. This census reveals David?s birthplace to be Leuchars, Fife, another parish adjacent to Logie:

The final piece of the jigsaw fell into place when I located the marriage of David and Margaret at Monimail, Fife, also fairly close to Logie, on 13 November 1767.

This meant I had managed to get Anne Reid?s Scottish ancestors back to her great-great-great-great-grandparents. I wonder if this couple, who wed almost 250 years ago, could ever have dreamed that one day a descendant of theirs would become a famous actress?

Finally, in researching another of Anne?s lines, I learned she had ancestors who were born on the estate of the Marquess of Cholmondeley at Cholmondeley Castle, Cheshire. A great-grandmother called Mary Humphreys was born there in 1831 and went into service in Chester, while a distant kinsman of Anne?s, called Edward Humphreys, born in 1809, was house steward to the Marquess and Marchioness for more than 20 years. He appears with them in the 1851 census at their London home, 12 Carlton Terrace, St Martin in the Fields:

Chicago Retail Veteran Turns to Experts for Disability Benefits

Chicago, Illinois ? As a grade school student, Delores Marsh became a mother figure to her family of four after their mother died. She considered going away to college after high school, but that matronly role kept her close to home.

Mrs. Marsh spent a couple semesters at a junior college before transferring to a secretarial school. She finished the secretarial program and felt ready for a new challenge.

Working two jobs at this point, she enrolled in an accounting institute. But after three semesters, the attraction to accounting faded. Mrs. Marsh left the institute, married a long-time-boyfriend and decided to make a career in retail.

A series of jobs followed over the next 15 years, from children?s stores and jewelry boutiques to plus-size apparel shops. She got her first management role at a women?s clothing store and never looked back.

In 2005, Mrs.

Marsh became the co-manager of a Chicago clothing store. Unfortunately, it was the last job she ever held.

A few months earlier, before taking the new job, Mrs. Marsh had injured herself at work. She picked up a heavy box awkwardly, hauled it up a ladder and placed it on a high shelf. Sharp pain coursed through her shoulder and worsened considerably by that evening.

An orthopedic specialist confirmed a rotator cuff tear and related problems. An insulin-dependent diabetic with high blood pressure, Mrs. Marsh worked through the pain.

Her orthopedic specialist scoped the shoulder in the fall of 2005 and restricted her to light duty. The clothing company balked at the request, leaving Mrs. Marsh with little choice but to quit.

Mrs.

Marsh?s wanted to work, but her health deteriorated further. Constantly fatigued and wracked with muscle pain, she could barely walk some days. She had also developed hyperthyroidism and lost more than 50 pounds within six months.

Mrs. Marsh decided to apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, a federal insurance program that provides monthly benefits to people under full retirement age (65 or older) and those who can no longer work because of a disability.

Afraid to navigate the process alone, she went online to look for help and found Allsup, the nation?s leading SSDI representation company.

The company took her case in March 2008. An Allsup representative explained the process and started immediately gathering medical information. A claims expert coordinated new physician appointments and pulled together a substantial case file for the Social Security Administration.

The agency denied her initial application and subsequent appeal, which is common. The next step would be to take her case before an administrative law judge. Mrs. Marsh?s Allsup representatives worked to bolster her file.

After months of waiting, the judge reviewed Mrs. Marsh?s extensive case file and awarded her SSDI benefits on the spot, with no need for a formal hearing.

Governor's Schedule: Substance Light, Interview Heavy | The Nerve

One of the duties of Gov. Nikki Haley?s press office is to compile the chief executive?s weekly schedule and email it to media members and others interested in the governor?s plans for the immediate future.

Haley?s schedule is often light on substance ? the notice for this week, for example, has just a single event ? so the press office has taken to recapping some of Haley?s activities from the previous week.

It?s understood that some days are going to be busier than others, but one has to wonder what the point in some of the prior recaps is.

Take the listing for Tuesday, March 27, as detailed by the governor?s office:

  • 9 a.m. ? Gov. Haley spoke at the Office of Small and Minority Business Assistance?s Trade Fair, Columbia Conference Center, 169 Laurelhurst Avenue, Columbia.
  • 10 a.m. ? Gov. Haley arrived at the Office of the Governor for office hours, State House, Columbia.
  • 10:30 a.m. ? Television news interview with WCIV ABC News 4 Charleston, Dean Stephens.
  • 10:50 a.m. ? Television news interview with WYFF News 4 Greenville, Myra Ruiz.
  • 11:25 a.m. ? Television news interview with WPDE Channel 15, Tim McGinnis.
  • 11:45 a.m. ? Interview with WLTX 19, Jennifer Bellamy.
  • 1 p.m. ? Magazine interview.
  • 2 p.m. ? Gov. Haley visited Marion County for agency meetings, Marion.
  • 2:30 p.m. ? Television news interview.
  • 4:05 p.m. ? Newspaper interview.

Beyond the question of why a sitting governor would release a schedule detailing the previous week?s events, it?s curious to note that on the day in question just two non-interviews are listed:

A speech at the Office of Small and Minority Business Assistance?s Trade Fair, and a visit to Marion County for agency meetings.

There was plenty of time for the media, however, with five television interviews, one newspaper interview and one magazine interview during the day.

It?s also interesting that the first four television interviews were scheduled back to back. Each, it appears, was from 20 to 45 minutes in length and with local stations, which the press office made sure to identify by including their call letters.

However, the three later interviews were simply listed as ?magazine interview,? ?television news interview? and ?newspaper interview.?

Judging from the schedule, the magazine was allotted an hour and the television interview appears to have been given fully 95 minutes. It?s unclear how long the newspaper interview lasted because it was the final event listed on the schedule, and no end time was included.

The governor?s press office didn?t return a call seeking information on the identity of the latter three media outlets.

But given the fact that the interviews were longer than those with the local stations and Haley?s staff chose not to reveal any identifying features in their email, one suspects they were national in nature.

Perhaps not coincidently, Haley?s book was released Tuesday, one week after the above interviews took place.

Allegations of widespread, sustained torture and other human rights violations by the Government of Sudan and Janjaweed forces against non-Arabic-speaking civilians are corroborated in a study published in this week's PLoS Medicine. In the study medical forensic experts reviewed the medical records of patients seen at a clinic in Darfur.

The authors, co-led by Alexander Tsai based at Harvard University and Mohammed Eisa based at Physicians for Human Rights, both in Cambridge, USA, conclude: "The widespread, organized, and sustained pattern of attacks documented in our study indicates that the actions of Janjaweed and [Government of Sudan] forces may constitute war crimes, crimes against humanity, and/or possibly acts of genocide."

In their study, the researchers analyzed the medical records of 325 patients attending the Amel Center for Treatment and Rehabilitation of Victims of Torture (which provided free clinical and legal services to civilians affected by human rights violations) in Nyala, South Darfur, between 2004 and 2006.

According to their medical records, 292 patients from 12 different non-Arabic-speaking tribes alleged that they had been attacked by Government or Janjaweed forces in rural areas across Darfur. Half of them claimed that they had been beaten, two-fifths reported gunshot wounds, and 36 out of the 73 women seen at the center disclosed that they had been sexually assaulted.

The researchers were able to determine whether the documented medical evidence was consistent with the alleged abuses in 198 medical records, and importantly, in all of these cases judged that the medical evidence was consistent with, highly consistent with or virtually diagnostic of the alleged abuses.

The authors say: "our study of non-Arabic-speaking civilian patients who visited the Amel Centre in Nyala, Darfur, between 2004 and 2006 found that in all of the medical records that contained sufficient detail, the recorded medical evidence was considered at least consistent with the alleged incidents of torture and other human rights violations. There were no cases in which the reports of medical examinations were considered not consistent with, or unrelated to, the recorded allegations."

They continue: "These data substantially enhance the credibility of the patients' claims of abuse. Importantly, however, the medical records provided the forensic reviewers with no data that could be used to corroborate either claims of assailant identities or claims of genocidal intent."

AEM Releases Annual Agriculture Equipment Business ?Outlook?

AEM Releases Annual Agriculture Equipment Business ?Outlook?

Milwaukee, Wisconsin (PRWEB) December 06, 2011

Agricultural machinery manufacturers expect overall 2011 business to the U.S., Canada and worldwide to grow in the 6-to-7-percent range by year-end but then taper off 2012 through 2014, with exports sales anticipated to increase the most, according to the annual business ?outlook? survey of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM).

Looking at combine and tractor sales for the U.S. and Canada, declines are mostly expected for combines; for 4-wheel-drive tractors, sales are expected to be stronger 2011 ? 2012 and then decline; and among 2-wheel-drive tractors, business is predicted to grow the most overall for machines in the 40-100 HP range. For other types of equipment, while there is a wide range in response, demand is expected to remain in the plus column for most products 2011 through 2014.

The survey asked respondents to rank how several factors would influence sales. Commodity prices were cited as a key positive factor, as well as interest rates and increased export demand. Negative factors included the state of the general economy and steel prices.

AEM is the North American-based international trade group representing the off-road equipment manufacturing industry. Each year the association polls its agricultural equipment manufacturer members about anticipated sales of the machines and equipment that help farmers and ranchers produce the food to meet growing worldwide needs.

Survey Summary

In the just-released AEM agriculture equipment ?outlook? survey:

For 2011, overall business in the United States is expected to grow 6.4 percent compared to the previous year; Canadian business is forecast to increase 7.6 percent; and industry business to the rest of the world is anticipated to gain 6.9 percent.
U.S. agricultural machinery business is then predicted to grow 4.9 percent in 2012, 2.9 percent in 2013, and 2.8 percent in 2014.
Canadian business overall is expected to be 4.8 percent higher in 2012, then increase 2.2 percent in 2013 and 1.7 percent in 2014.
Industry business to the rest of the world is anticipated to gain 5.1 percent in 2012, 4.7 percent in 2013, and 4.6 percent in 2014.

?Agricultural equipment manufacturers overall fared very well in an otherwise struggling economy. Recent growth has been positive in most categories, and exports to emerging countries are rebounding. Strong commodity demand and prices have translated into equipment sales. Net farm income is expected to be up 28 percent in 2011, and net cash income to grow nearly 19 percent,? stated Charlie O?Brien, AEM agriculture sector vice president.

?The general economy has stalled somewhat in recent months, and we are always aware of the potential for boom-and-bust cycles; manufacturers are assessing the business landscape for any possible slowdowns in domestic demand as well as overseas. Agricultural equipment plays a vital role in boosting productivity to meet the need to sustain a growing world population and the increasing prosperity of many countries. These are sound fundamentals for long-term business,? O?Brien said.

?We continue to push Congressional leaders to work together for passage of meaningful policies that strengthen manufacturing and create jobs. Our ?I Make America? grassroots effort has been successful with a focus on export-friendly policies that help U.S. farmers and manufacturers stay in business by selling their products internationally and a focus on adequate transportation funding to help them get goods to market more efficiently and safely.?

O?Brien added, ?A thriving agricultural industry sets off a very positive ?trickle down? effect that plays an invaluable role in generating domestic jobs and revenue in the country. Job creation is still a major issue to help bolster the economy, and we plan to expand ?I Make America? to other industry issues such as the 2012 Farm Bill. We are facing an election year and a very divided and acrimonious Washington environment in which negotiations will take place.?

Tractor and Combine Business

For 2011, U.S. sales of combines are expected to decline 0.3 percent by year-end, with declines predicted in 2012 of 4.8 percent, 0.5 percent in 2013 and 3.0 percent in 2014. For Canada, 2011 combine sales are anticipated to gain 2.5 percent by year-end and then drop off, with declines of 3.8 percent in 2012, 0.5 percent in 2013 and 3.0 percent in 2014.

For 4-wheel-drive tractors, U.S. sales are predicted to gain 5.4 percent in 2011 and 0.2 percent in 2012, then drop 2.0 percent in 2013 and 4.8 percent in 2014. For Canada, 2011 business is expected to grow 0.5 percent in 2011 and 2.5 percent in 2012, with declines in 2013 of 2.0 percent and 3.5 percent in 2014.

Sales of 2-wheel-drive tractors in the less-than-40 HP range are expected to grow 2011 ? 2014 in both the U.S. and Canada: For the U.S, gains are predicted of 1.4 percent in 2011, 3.2 percent in 2012, 4.3 percent in 2013 and 4.8 percent in 2014. Canadian sales are anticipated to grow 2.6 percent in 2011, 3.4 percent in 2012, 4.0 percent in 2013 and 4.5 percent in 2014.

U.S. and Canadian sales of 2-wheel-drive tractors in the 40-100 HP range are also expected to be positive 2011-2014 for both the U.S. and Canada. For the U.S., growth is seen for 2011 of 3.3 percent, 2012 of 3.9 percent, 2013 of 4.3 percent and 2014 of 6.6 percent. For Canada, the expected gains are 4.3 percent for 2011, 4.6 percent for 2012, 2.8 percent for 2013 and 5.6 percent for 2014.

For over-100 HP 2-wheel-drive tractors, in the U.S., gains are predicted for 2011 of 2.7 percent, 2012 of 2.8 percent, 2013 of 1.3 percent and 2014 of 0.6 percent. For Canada, growth is expected in 2011 of 3.3 percent and 1.8 percent in 2012, followed by declines of 0.8 percent in 2013 and 1.8 percent in 2014.

Scope of Survey

In the AEM ?outlook? survey, each business-activity forecast is the average of responses from manufacturers in each product line, predicting industry-wide expectations rather than individual company performance, and unit sales rather than company profitability. This year?s edition of the ?outlook? report covers 22 types of farm-related equipment. Click here for full survey results ? online at http://www.aem.org in the market information section.
