CSN: 49ers LBs have 'potential' to be best ever

KURZg.png

SANTA CLARA ? Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has been around good linebacking groups before.

In fact, as the coach of that position for the New Orleans Saints from 1986-94, an argument can be made he coached the best assemblage of all-time in Rickey Jackson, Sam Mills, Vaughan Johnson and Pat Swilling.

Could the current 49ers group of Aldon Smith, NaVorro Bowman, Patrick Willis and Ahmad Brooks be mentioned in the same breath as that legendary Saints quartet, by the time all is said and done?

?Before I start answering any questions about comparing those groups, these guys need to be together a little bit longer. Maybe next year at this time I?ll give you a good answer,? Fangio said, with a slight smirk.

He continued: ?You get good players playing together in the same system for that long of a period, good things are going to happen. They learn each other. Things become second nature. The first time they have to communicate a tough situation, isn?t the first time anymore. It?s the third, fourth, fifth.

?It?s the spoken communication and the unspoken communication.?

That celebrated Saints group was together for seven years from 1986-92, and combined for 18 Pro Bowl appearances. Now that Bowman is locked up for the foreseeable future after he agreed to a five-year extension on Tuesday, the 49ers linebackers will be together until at least 2015.

Any talk that they might become one of the fiercest linebacking groups of all-time is still extremely premature, according to Fangio. After all, Brooks and Bowman are in just their second years as starters, while Smith is starting for the first time this season.

But, it's possible.

?I think the potential is there, but we?ve got to do it. We all know what the word potential means. [The Saints] did it for seven straight years together, this is really our first year together as a starting unit,? he said.

Willis, the veteran of the group, doesn?t want to think too far ahead, either. After all, the 49ers are in the middle of what could be a Super Bowl season, standing second in the NFC with a 8-2-1 record as they head to St. Louis this weekend.

He wants to take care of more immediate business.

?Right now, all I can think about is just taking advantage of the opportunity now. Not banking on next year, and the year after, and the year after,? Willis said on Tuesday after the Bowman extension was announced. ?You know, things happen and you never know about this business. All we can control is right now.?

Bowman said: ?Right now, we?re just worried about this year, but we really have a chance to do something special. We have all four linebackers being here, for sure, for the next three years. We can definitely make a great statement for ourselves, and a great legacy for our defense.?

[REWIND: So happy together -- Bowman, Willis paired through 2016]

As opposing offenses prepare to face the ferocious 49ers defense, both now and in future years, Fangio issued a warning for receivers coming across the middle.

?If they watch enough film, they?ll see that there are some land mines in there that they might step on,? he said.

San Francisco?s team defense ranks second in the NFL, but had a game it would like to forget just three weeks ago against the Rams.

The start in particular was troubling, as St. Louis jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead on two long drives before San Francisco came back to salvage a 24-24 tie.

They?ll be much more prepared on Sunday at the Edward Jones Dome, according to defensive tackle Ray McDonald.

?They came out intense. We didn?t come out the way we usually do,? McDonald said. ?A lot of guys, we?ve been talking about it since that game. We?ll talk about it today in the walkthrough, like, hey man, we can?t come out like we did the last time we played them because they outplayed us the last game.

?If we do that out there in St. Louis, we?ll get our butts whipped.?

Fangio gave a tip of his hat to the Rams for their blocking, which allowed them to gain 159 yards on the ground, including 101 from Steven Jackson.

?It was a low point because they blocked us, and they ran the ball extremely well against us. Give them credit, their o-line, tight ends and backs blocked us and ran the ball harder than we were able to defend at that time, so give them credit,? he said.

McDonald said the rough start was just something that every team experiences at least a few times throughout a 16-game season.

?You don?t want to make excuses, but every team goes through it,? he said. ?You have those weeks sometimes. It?s a long season; sometimes you?re going to be down. But you have to limit the weeks you?re down, because if you don?t, you end up with a losing record.?

* * *

McDonald weighed in the biggest point of conversation surrounding the team right now, addressing quarterback Alex Smith?s removal from the starting lineup in favor of Colin Kaepernick.

?We?re a team. Whoever is back there, we?re going to support him. If Kap is back there, we?ll support him 100 percent. We?re about winning football games here, and the best player will play,? McDonald said.

Still, he feels for Smith, who was only removed from the lineup when he got hurt against the Rams and who met with the media earlier Thursday morning.

?I mean, it does suck to kind of lose your job to injury. But, I mean, that happens in the NFL. Guys will move on, guys have mouths to feed, guys want to win championships. You have to kind of put that in the back of your mind.?

Bonds, Clemens deserve Hall vote

There are 37 players on the 2013 Hall of Fame ballot. And, over the coming weeks, we will consider all of their candidacies in turn. ?But there are two players making their debut on the ballot who tower above all of the others, and nothing useful can be said about the Hall of Fame class of 2013 without first considering those two.?So let?s talk about Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens.

Bonds and Clemens are two players who, in a just world, would be unanimous selections for induction but who, for reasons discussed earlier today, will almost certainly not make the Hall. ?Let?s first walk through their obvious baseball qualifications for the Hall ? and bear with me, because I will assume in this first part that the performance enhancing drug issues don?t exist ? and then deal with those pesky objections so many have to their candidacy.

The Baseball Bonafides

While it?s always hard to compare players between eras, it is not hyperbole to say that Bonds and Clemens would be finalists in a contest to name the greatest hitter and the greatest pitcher who ever lived. We all think we know how great they were because their careers just wound up five years ago, but even the most dedicated baseball fan can be shocked to take a look back over their stat sheets to see just how thoroughly they dominated their era.

I won?t go into hardcore statistics with you, but let?s just see where Barry Bonds resides on the leader board in various categories:

  • He?s the all-time home run king;
  • He?s the all-time walk king and the all-time intentional walk king
  • Third all-time in runs scored;
  • Third all-time in wins above replacement (WAR);
  • Sixth all-time in on-base percentage;
  • Sixth all-time in slugging percentage;
  • Fourth all-time in OPS (on-base plus slugging) and Third all-time in adjusted OPS (which weights for era and ballpark);
  • Second all-time in extra base hits;
  • Fourth all-time in total bases;
  • Fourth all-time in RBI;
  • Second all-time in total times on base; and
  • He?s the single-season record holder for home runs and base-on-balls (actually he holds the top three seasons in base-on-balls)

In addition, he has the record for most MVP awards (seven) and probably deserved to win the MVP a couple more times, most notably 1991. And he wasn?t all bat, either. He holds the all-time record for putouts by a left fielder, won eight Gold Gloves and stole 514 bases.

How about Roger Clemens?

  • Third all-time in strikeouts (4,672)
  • Ninth all-time in wins (354), but third among pitchers who didn?t spend the bulk of their career in the deadball era;
  • Sixteenth all-time in innings pitched, but ninth among non-deadballers;
  • Seventh all-time in games started;
  • Third all-time in WAR for pitchers;
  • Tenth all-time in adjusted ERA+ (which is analogous to OPS+ in that it weights for era); and
  • First in several other complex era-adjusting statistics such as runs saved, win probability and the like.

Like Bonds and his MVPs, Clemens has seven Cy Young Awards and arguments for more. He also has one MVP award of his own.

When you look merely at their production and their dominance, the number of hitters better than Barry Bonds and the number of pitchers better than Roger Clemens in all of baseball history can be counted on one hand. Comparing Bonds and Clemens to people like Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ted Williams and Walter Johnson is not just not hyperbole. It?s absolutely necessary, for their like has rarely if ever been seen in the game of baseball. ?Put simply, they are immortals.

But their baseball exploits are not the end of the story, obviously.

source: Bonds, Clemens and Performance Enhancing Drugs

While Clemens and (to some extent ) Bonds continue to either deny or play down their use of PEDs, and while the criminal prosecutions against them were either misguided, unsuccessful or both, it is simply obtuse to believe that they weren?t significant PED users. Bonds? use was painstakingly documented in the 2007 book ?Game of Shadows.? Clemens? use is far less clear cut, but just because the Justice Department couldn?t convict him of lying about it under oath doesn?t mean that we have to assume he never did it. For our purposes here, let?s make the exceedingly safe assumption that he did.

Bonds and Clemens use of PEDs will, for many, disqualify them from Hall of Fame consideration out of hand. ?The reason they won?t get 75% of the vote and induction on this year?s ballot is because far, far more than 25% of the Hall of Fame electorate believes that anyone who used PEDs should not be in the Hall of Fame, full stop. Many if not most fans feel this way too, as do no small amount of current and former major leaguers.

But should this be so? Absolutely not. And to explain why, I will take on the arguments commonly made against their induction one-by-one:

Argument: Bonds and Clemens may have amazing stats, but those stats were bogus due to their PED use.

Response: Sure, to some extent their statistics were inflated. But by how much? When did Bonds start using? When did Clemens start using? If, as is almost universally agreed-upon, it was during the middle-to-late years of their career, how were they so dominant early on as well? Bonds won three MVP awards before the ?Game of Shadows? authors believed he began using. Clemens had an MVP, three Cy Young Awards and was generally considered the best pitcher in the game before his chief accuser, former trainer Brian McNamee, claims he began using PEDs. If you stopped their careers the day before they picked up their first syringes, they?d be first-ballot Hall of Famers.

But even taking their whole careers in, it is lunacy to suggest that, inflated or not, Bonds and Clemens weren?t vastly superior to their competition. Hundreds if not thousands of major leaguers took PEDs during the 1980s, 90s and early 2000s. Many of them, by the way, were pitchers who faced Bonds and hitters who faced Clemens. But that aside, no one matched Bonds? and Clemens? performance. It?s obvious why: the E in PEDs stands for ?enhancing,? not ?creating,? and thus one cannot ignore the fact that Bonds and Clemens were unique and historic talents who, even if the final tallies on their stat sheets should be somewhat discounted, clearly would have been among the all-time greats without the juice.

Argument: You can?t just discount their stats. Bonds and Clemens cheated, cheating is wrong, and thus they should be excluded.

Response: Cheating is wrong, no question. But Hall of Fame voting is not a rule-enforcement mechanism or a court of law. That?s the job of the Joint Drug Program agreed upon between the league and the union. If someone breaks the drug rules and gets caught and gets punished, it?s up to the league to punish them, not baseball writers who comprise the electorate.

But that little technicality aside, the Hall of Fame has long welcomed cheaters with open arms, and no current rule says that a cheater, be he a drug cheater or otherwise, can?t be allowed in (I?ll get to the issue of character in a minute). Gaylord Perry threw a spitball. Don Sutton and Whitey Ford (and probably almost every other pitcher in history) scuffed or cut balls. Scores of batters corked their bats. The 1951 Giants won the pennant after rigging up an elaborate, electric sign-stealing mechanism. John McGraw, both as a player and a manager, invented and carried out more ways to break rules than anyone in history, ranging from umpire distracting and cutting the corners on bases and tripping or obstructing opposing runners. Ty Cobb sharpened his spikes in an effort to maim opposing players who would dare try to tag him out. While we single out the 1919 White Sox as a unique stain on the game, many players ? including Hall of Famers ? fixed baseball games prior to the Black Sox scandal.

While many have attempted to argue that using PEDs is different in kind than all of those other examples ? examples which are often laughed off as quirky or colorful ? the fact is that there are PED users in the Hall of Fame already. Only, instead of steroids, they used?amphetamines or ?greenies? as they were called. Players who have either admitted to or have been credibly accused of taking such things include?Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt,?Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Hank Aaron and Willie Mays. And this leaves out all of the drug and/or alcohol users who took things which hindered their performance, which also impacted the competitive nature of the game, albeit adversely to their team?s interests. And it also assumes that there are no steroid users already in the Hall of Fame, which I do not believe is a reasonable assumption.

The common thread here: all of these examples of baseball cheating involved players breaking rules in an effort to gain some sort of edge on the competition. Rule breaking that, in turn, put the competition in the unenviable position of having to decide if they too should break the rules to keep up.

The point here isn?t that two wrongs make a right. The point is that the Hall of Fame has never cared about wrongs in the first place. ?Why it should start caring about them now is beyond me.

Argument: The Hall of Fame ballot has a character clause on it, and even if the past cheaters were let in, voters are nonetheless obligated to abide by the character clause now and keep Bonds and Clemens out.

Response: ?Yes, the Hall of Fame ballot has a character clause. It reads like this:

?Voting shall be based upon the player?s record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character and contribution to the team(s) on which the player played.?

It should be noted, though, that this clause was not invented to keep bad seeds out. It was invented to let good eggs in, even if they weren?t quite up to Hall of Fame standards otherwise. It was designed to be a bonus, not a detriment. Specifically, as Bill James argued in his seminal book ?Whatever Happened to the Hall of Fame,??the clause was written by baseball commissioner?Kennesaw Mountain Landis in an effort to get a player named?Eddie Grant inducted into the Hall on the basis of his heroism in World War I (Grant was killed?in action in Lorraine, France). ?The attempt to get Grant inducted never worked ? he just wasn?t a good enough player ? but the clause stuck.

It stuck despite the fact that character ? like cheating ? has never been true criteria for Hall of Fame induction. The Hall is filled with racists, segregationists, cheaters, drug users, criminals both convicted and merely accused, and depending on how you view Tom Yawkey?s treatment of former Red Sox trainer Donald J. Fitzpatrick, an argument can be made that an enabler of sexual abuse has a plaque in Cooperstown as well. Heck, as Joe Posnanski noted a few years ago, way back in the 1930s a guy who murdered his wife and children got a couple of Hall of Fame votes.

But the point here isn?t exactly the same ?well, other bad seeds are in the Hall? point mentioned above. ?It?s more about how irrelevant the clause is to one?s prowess or fame as a baseball player and, more to the point, how ill-equipped baseball writers are at judging a player?s character. ?Indeed, the presence of all of those bad seeds shows how ill-equipped they are. The clause was always there, yet those guys got the votes. It?s possible this was the case because all of the writers?accidentally forgot to apply?the voting rules. It?s far more likely, however, that the writers, in their wisdom, realized that they were in no position to look into the hearts of men and judge their moral worth. ?It?s something that some writers are now starting to realize about the PED crowd. ?It?s something they all should do.

Conclusion

In the final analysis, I hope we can all agree that there is no baseball reason whatsoever to keep Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens out of the Hall of Fame. Their baseball accomplishments ? both those which can be measured by statistics and those which cannot ? are so far beyond sufficient for induction that it?s almost laughable to list them. ?To oppose their candidacy, then, one must make a moral or ethical case based on their drug use and the voter?s opinion of their character. And that case will almost certainly be made from a great distance and with?imperfect?information.

You may feel comfortable doing such a thing. ?I do not. ?And I believe that any Hall of Fame that does not include two of the best players to ever swing a bat or throw a ball, no matter what their flaws, is an utter joke.

Best Foods to Beat the Winter Blues

The winter weight gain many people experience may not be entirely due to ?a few too many cookies at holiday parties ? there may be larger forces at play.

The short, cold days of winter can be an energy suck. In a recent Women?s Health survey, 63% of respondents said winter weather made them feel tired.

Plus, by some estimates, nearly one in five people have some effects from seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. The basic gist: Less sunlight can mean you produce less of the hormones that regulate mood, leaving you feeling groggy and a little depressed.

Exercise is one way to feel better, but nutritionists say shifting the way you eat can also help you feel better, with the added bonus of avoiding expensive weight gain.

We asked them for their top picks to work into a winter diet. Here are six to try:

Leafy Greens

Kale, spinach and collards ?can help boost your mood and lift depression,? says?Lindsey Smith, author of ?Junk Foods & Junk Moods.? They?re great sources of fiber, protein, iron and various other vitamins and minerals.

Try it: Our $10 dinner challenge?has recipes for a spinach-rice medley, and a strawberry chicken salad that could easily be made with spinach instead of romaine.

Cold-Water Fish

Salmon, tuna and sardines are particularly rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. ?Studies have found they help regulate the neurotransmitters that affect moods,? says nutritionist Rania Batayneh of EssentialNutritionForYou.com. Low levels of Omega 3?s can contribute to depression and pessimism.

Try it: Our watermelon recipe roundup included a pairing of sushi-grade salmon and watermelon-rind pickles.

Dark Chocolate

It?s healthy? in moderation, of course. The benefits come from Phenylethylamine, ?which is a feel-good endorphin often released in the brain when people fall in love,? Smith says. Some studies have also found dark chocolate reduces stress hormones.

Try it: Our $10 romantic meals challenge offers up a simple chocolate souffl?.

Nuts and seeds

Nuts and seeds can represent rich sources of Omega 3?s and other nutrients. ?In particular, walnuts and flax seeds are worth working in,? says registered dietician Tina Marinaccio. Work them into smoothies, salads and other dishes.

Try it: Our pumpkin recipe roundup?included roasted pumpkin seed recipes.

Apples

?Apples are shown to be just as effective as having a cup of coffee in the morning,? Smith says. In addition to making you feel energized, they?re a great source of filling fiber.

Try it: Our frugal fall cooking roundup included apple-parsnip soup, homemade apple chips and other goodies.

Kefir

?The liquid yogurt is rich in probiotics that help regulate digestive health and immune function,? says registered dietician Tamara Duker Freuman.

Try it: Sub it in for other dairy products. ?I use ?it instead of buttermilk in pancake recipes to infuse them with healthy ?probiotics and keep the fat content down,? says Freuman. ?I use it instead of heavy cream? in my pumpkin pie popsicles for a low-fat, low calorie treat for me and my ?kids; instead of yogurt in smoothies so they don?t get too thick and gloppy ?and instead of milk in my mini-muffin recipes.?

NATO visits southeast Turkey for Patriot missiles

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? A NATO team assessing sites for the possible deployment of Patriot missiles to protect Turkey's border with Syria on Wednesday inspected military installations in a province in southeastern Turkey, the country's state-run news agency reported.

NATO member Turkey asked allies to deploy the missiles as a defense against any aerial attack from Syria, after mortar rounds and shells from Syria struck Turkish territory, killing five people. Syria is believed to have several hundred ballistic surface-to-surface missiles capable of carrying chemical warheads.

The team that is selecting sites for the air defense batteries visited military facilities in Malatya province, some 200 kilometers (124.28 miles) from the Syrian border, the Anadolu Agency reported. The province is already home to an early warning radar that is part of NATO missile defense system capable of countering ballistic missile threats from Iran.

The visit came as the alliance said it would "favorably examine" Turkey's request for the air defense missiles but was waiting the team's report on where to base them.

NATO spokeswoman Carmen Romero said the team was expected to finish its work in the next few days and would feed its proposals to NATO's military authorities.

"This recommendation is a key element in element in the Council's decision-making process," she said, in reference to the North Atlantic Council which is comprised of the ambassadors of all 28 members and is the military alliance's governing body.

Romero said that "allies with available Patriots have also made clear their intention to augment Turkey's defenses, subject to national processes."

Germany, the Netherlands and the U.S. have the advanced PAC-3 model Patriots that Turkey wants for intercepting ballistic missiles.

The deployment of the Patriots is also likely to be discussed at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Russia has come out against it, saying that basing the missiles so close to the border could worsen the bloodshed in Syria.

Nokia says RIM has breached patent agreement, takes legal action

Finnish handset maker Nokia Corp. Wednesday said it has filed suits in courts in the U.S., U.K. and Canada against Blackberry handset maker Research In Motion Ltd for allegedly breaching a patent licensing agreement.

In a statement, Nokia claimed that its Canadian peer can't sell devices equipped with wireless local area network technology, known as WiFi, without first agreeing with Nokia on royalty terms.

Nokia has a patent licensing agreement with RIM, that was extended late in 2008. However, Nokia claims that the deal covers essential patents for GSM, WCDMA and CDMA2000 mobile technologies, while RIM argues that the license also covers WLAN technology.

Mark Durrant, Nokia's spokesman on legal matters, said an arbitration tribunal in Stockholm ruled against RIM in the matter, finding RIM in breach of its contract. The latest legal action is aimed at getting official recognition of the Stockholm arbitration ruling, so allowing Nokia to take further action.

The Stockholm arbitration ruling is confidential and RIM declined to comment on the matter.

Nokia is also involved in a separate patent suit against RIM after filing claims at courts in the U.S. and Germany in May this year, alleging that products from the Canadian company, as well as products from rivals HTC Corp. and visual technology company Viewsonic Corp., infringe a number of its patents.

More NFL players testing positive for amphetamines

NEW YORK (AP) ? More NFL players are testing positive for amphetamines, a class of substances that includes the ADHD drug Adderall.

Since the start of last season, more than 10 players suspended for failing drug tests have publicly blamed it on taking the stimulant. And while the league doesn't identify the substance when a player is penalized, senior vice president Adolpho Birch acknowledges that the number of positives for amphetamines has increased.

Because the type of drug isn't disclosed under the NFL's agreement with the union, nothing prevents a player from claiming he took Adderall when, in fact, he tested positive for a steroid or another stimulant. The tests don't differentiate between Adderall and other amphetamines, Birch said, but he does believe Adderall abuse is on the rise in the league.

With many college students using the drug without a prescription to study deep into the night, he said, players come into the NFL accustomed to the idea of popping the pill for a boost.

"It's not a secret that it's a societal trend," Birch, who oversees law and labor policy for the league, said Wednesday. "I think we're starting to see some of the effects of that trend."

Players diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, can apply for a therapeutic use exemption that permits them to take Adderall. An independent administrator reviews their medical history and diagnostic tests to approve or reject the application.

Several players who have tested positive said they had a prescription for Adderall but not an exemption. New York Giants rookie safety Will Hill said in October before starting his four-game suspension that he didn't know when he received a prescription that Adderall was on the league's list of banned substances.

He appealed the suspension and lost.

"I accept full responsibility for this situation, and it won't happen again," Hill said.

Dr. Steven Pliszka, a psychiatry professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center, said about 4 percent of the general population has ADHD. The number could be even higher among professional athletes, he said, because some traits of the disorder may actually help them in sports.

But Birch said the percentage of NFL players with exemptions was, in fact, lower than the expected number for the general population. That's a significant difference from Major League Baseball, where more than 100 players have been granted exemptions in recent seasons. That works out to close to 9 percent of all the players on 40-man rosters. The percentage of players being treated for the condition is roughly 10 percent.

Dr. Pliszka is skeptical that people can develop ADHD as adults. To prove a diagnosis, he said, a player should be able to document he had trouble concentrating back in school.

Adderall is prescribed to help increase focus and reduce impulsivity in people with ADHD. For athletes, its benefits are different than what fans usually associate with performance-enhancing drugs.

"It's not going to help you hit harder, run faster - not at all like steroids," Dr. Pliszka said.

But like those college kids cramming for a final, NFL players can get a boost from the drug.

"It would absolutely give you a competitive advantage. Fatigue, focus, concentration, maybe aggression," said Dr. Michael Joyner, a sports physiologist and anesthesiologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. "And if they were using it during training, the ability to train harder, longer, the ability to have fewer bad days."

In Seattle, the Seahawks' starting cornerbacks face four-game suspensions after failing tests for performance-enhancing drugs, though exactly which substance was not clear. Fullback Michael Robinson, the team's union rep, vented Wednesday about the league's drug policy.

"When I think of performance enhancing, I think of making me run faster, jump higher. I mean, really getting an edge on somebody," he said. "I just wish they would take some of those substances and clear it up so we know what exactly is going on."

Birch insisted the NFL does all it can to inform players that Adderall is a banned substance.

"There's ample education and awareness out there if the player is attuned to it," he said.

Failure Of India'S Big Rocket Project Is Symbolic Of Deep Structural Problems

The ongoing "Asia Pivot" by United States is rapidly changing the regional dynamics of the Indo - Pacific region, and nowhere is it more visible than the sphere of cooperation in defence and space research.

Recently Canadian and Australian defence co-operation and ties with India reached unprecedented highs, a chain of event termed as the "Rise of the Anglosphere" by historian Walter Russell Mead.

However, the successive failure of Indian GSLV missions, combined with India's stubborn secrecy and fierce independence in the space sector is giving rise to doubts about the scope of further future co-operations.

Although the failure of this signature launching vehicle is attributed to technical glitches, it is highly symbolic of the greater lack of clarity, purpose and direction in the Indian space program.

The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) was originally intended to be India's signature launching vehicle, eventually to launch India's INSAT type satellites, and reduce dependence on foreign rockets.

In the early nineties, with the collapse of the Soviet Union, India was forced to develop independent launching vehicles. India originally tried to buy the technology to build a cryogenic upper stage from Russia, but was denied, under pressure from United States and other Western countries.

With the development of indigenous Cryogenic engine, India became the sixth country in the World to posses the technology, which could be potentially used for civilian and military purposes.

Indian GSLV generally uses L40 liquid strap on boosters and old Soviet KVD 1 upper stage. But even though Indian military and ballistic missile programs were successful, as recently evident with the successful launch of Agni V ICBM, its civilian rocket and space program were mediocre at best.

The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), a launcher vehicle used previously to launch civilian satellites was used as a model of GSLV programs, but it was not successful. Multiple versions of GSLV were launched in the last decade, with more than half of them failing due to technical difficulties. A brief stint of success in 2003- 04 was followed by successive failures.

The vehicle failed to reach orbit, lost control of liquid fuel booster, veered of designated trajectory and had to be destroyed over the Bay of Bengal, or failed to deliver payload in the last four missions. With an unprecedented failure rate, GSLV is gradually on its way to be the costliest misadventure of Indian strategic and space sector. The eighth launch is scheduled in 2013.

The causes of these failures are minor, according to the official bureaucratic rhetoric, and were attributed to minor technical malfunctions. There was no clear response to queries as to why five out of seven launches have resulted in total or partial failure.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is also secretive and tightlipped about capability and weight of the satellites and why India is still unsuccessful in launching communication satellites more than 3000 KG, 36 Transponder class, whereas the nearby competitors like Japan and China, not to mention USA, Russia and European Space Agency have already moved on to triple that size.

There is no clarity and accountability when it comes to tax payer's money spent on space research, and no heads roll even when there are repeated failures. The lack of purpose is also evident as India lacks fixed and dedicated plan in the Space sector.

In an interview earlier this year, Dr. K, Radhakrishnan, chairman of ISRO, stated that India's main concern and thrust is in the area of applications and not manned space flights and space stations, unlike Russia, US or China. India with its massive population and democratic set up needs more communication satellite to cater to domestic needs, unlike China which is heavily centralized and controlled.

However that argument and logic falls flat as India is already planning for its second lunar mission in early 2014, Chandrayaan 2, and possibly a manned space mission by 2017.

In January 2011, the U.S. officially removed export controls on several subsidiaries of India's Defense Research and Development Organization and the ISRO. It was a clear signal that the United States would like to chart a new future of space co-operation with India.

American think tank Heritage Foundation also published a report around same time, calling for enhanced space and missile defence co-operation between India, Australia and United States, including satellite defence and interceptors, theatre based missile defence and most importantly future co-operation and joint space programs. However there seems to be lukewarm response and enthusiasm from the Indian side.

India's notorious reliance on Russian hardware is also a major hindrance when it comes to further cooperation with the West. Only with the benefit of hindsight would we be able to determine the trajectory of India's space co-operation with the West, or whether it takes any specific direction, but at this present point of time, it is safe to assume, that without any clear plan, or white paper, India's current space prospects are quite grim, and will continue in the chaotic and headless way for the near foreseeable future.

Home prices increase in most major US cities

(AP) ? Home prices increased in September in most major U.S. cities, more evidence of a housing recovery that is providing a lift to the fragile economy.

Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller reported Tuesday that its 20-city index of home prices rose 3 percent in September compared with the same month last year. Prices also gained 3.6 percent in the July-September quarter compared with the same quarter in 2011.

Across the nation, prices increased in 18 of 20 cities over the 12-month period. In Phoenix, prices jumped 20.4 percent over that stretch to lead all cities. Prices in Atlanta showed a modest 0.1 percent increase, ending 26 straight consecutive year-over-year declines.

Prices also rose in September from August in 13 cities. Five metro regions posted declines, while two were unchanged.

In Las Vegas, one of the hardest hit during the housing crisis, prices increased 1.4 percent ? the biggest month-over-month gain. Prices rose 1.1 percent in Phoenix and Minneapolis. The largest decline was in Cleveland, where prices fell 0.9 percent.

Monthly prices are not seasonally adjusted, so some of the declines may signal the end of the summer buying period.

David M. Blitzer, chairman of the Case-Shiller index, said that when adjusting for seasonal factors, only one city showed a decline in September versus two in August. "Despite the seasons, housing continues to improve," Blitzer said.

The S&P/Case-Shiller index covers roughly half of U.S. homes. It measures prices compared with those in January 2000 and creates a three-month moving average. The September figures are the latest available.

Steady increases in home prices have helped drive a modest recovery in the housing market. Rising prices encourage more potential buyers to come off the sidelines and purchase homes. And more people may put their homes on the market as they gain confidence that they can sell at a good price.

Higher home prices can also make homeowners feel wealthier and more likely to spend more. Consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of the U.S. economy.

A big reason for the rebound is that the excess supply of homes that built up before the housing crisis has finally thinned out. The number of previously occupied homes available for sale has fallen to a 10-year low. The inventory of new homes is also near the lowest level since 1963.

At the same time, more people are looking to buy or rent a home after living with relatives or friends during and immediately after the Great Recession.

Those trends are also pushing up home sales and construction. Sales of previously occupied homes are near five-year highs, excluding temporary spikes in 2009 and 2010 when a homebuyer tax credit boosted purchases.

Builders, meanwhile, are more optimistic that the recovery will endure. A measure of their confidence rose to the highest level in six and a half years this month. And builders broke ground on new homes and apartments at the fastest pace in more than four years last month.

Password Recovery, Window Switching, and Holiday Sales

Password Recovery, Window Switching, and Holiday SalesReaders offer their best tips for keeping your passwords secure, switching between open windows, and saving money during holiday sales.

Every day we receive boatloads of great reader tips in our inbox, but for various reasons?maybe they're a bit too niche, maybe we couldn't find a good way to present it, or maybe we just couldn't fit it in?the tip didn't make the front page. From the Tips Box is where we round up some of our favorites for your buffet-style consumption. Got a tip of your own to share? Add it in the comments, email it to tips at lifehacker.com, or share it on our tips and expert pages.

Password Recovery, Window Switching, and Holiday Sales

Use Aliases for Password Recovery

Ncw96 shares another way to keep your passwords secure:

I saw this article on password security that you just posted and had a similar idea:

You should use an email service with alias support for your password recovery information. These aliases cannot be used as a login address for your email account, so the hacker would not have the necessary info to access your email. This gives you an extra layer of security for your resets.

This method definitely works with Outlook.com accounts and iCloud accounts.

Cycle Through Open Windows of a Certain Program with AutoHotkey

Moon shares another awesome AutoHotkey script:

With Autohotkey's GroupAdd function, you can peruse opened files of a certain type, alt+tab style, without having to cycle through other kinds of files or programs that may also be running.

Here's a script example of what can be done:

GroupAdd, texts, ahk_class Notepad
return

^Numpad1::GroupActivate, texts, r

^Numpad2::
GroupClose, texts , A
return

In the above case, the Ctrl key plus the number 1 on the number pad will run you through all the text files you have open, assuming that Notepad is what you use for editing. If you use something else, such as MetaPad (my fave), then every instance of "Notepad" can be replaced with "metapad". Ultimately the name you use will be determined by the AutoIt3 Windows Info Spy tool that comes with Autohotkey. E.g. the class name for Notepad++ will likely read differently, though I haven't tested with that program? it might present itself as ahk_class Notepad++, or similar.

Any instances of Notepad that you open, whether they're new blank files or ones already in existence, will fall under the group name of "texts". In that way, each instance is added to your cycle-through list automatically. If you have browsers running, a music player, a graphics editor etc, they won't be part of the shuffle, because they're not in the group named texts , and thus won't show up to distract?so long as you use Ctrl+Numpad1 instead of the normal Alt+Tab.

The last three lines are just something I added for convenience. They close the whole group, using Ctrl+Numpad 2.

GroupAdd can do a lot more than this, too. See this link for more information.

Shop Holiday Sales, But Ignore Items That Aren't Marked Down

Thegamefreak0134 shares a simple tip for sale shopping:

I had the pleasure of setting the ads at [popular retail chain] today, and I want to point out a trend: for every item that I put out on sale, there was at least one item that got a silent increase in price. The accessories near the computers on sale were almost always marked up.

This should really surprise no one, as it's a no-brainer for the company to do this to try to stay on top of profits, so it's just buyer beware. The item that's on sale is probably a great deal, just don't negate it by buying all the marked up accessories for it. Shop around and be diligent.

This may not apply to every chain, but it's really repeating the same thing we always say about sales: look for the lowest price you can get at any given time, and you'll always be sure you're getting the best deal. Photo by Memphis CVB.

Use Android's Notification Drawer to Hide Phone Numbers in Screenshots

Dennizvu discovers an easy way to hide personal information:

My Android phone's messaging app shows the phone number in addition to the contact name above the conversation. When I need to screenshot the conversation (for any given reason, lulz on Facebook or something else), I pull down on the notification shade just enough to cover the phone number, and using my other hand, take a screenshot. No need to cut or block out using editing software, and requires very little work.

Groucho Marx voted America?s favorite facial hair icon

Comedian Groucho Marx was voted as having the best facial hair in an online survey. (Wikicommons)A new survey confirms that America is a country full of "Marxists." But in this case, we're talking about facial hair, not political preferences.

According to results from the findmypast.com survey, Americans chose the late comedian Groucho Marx as having the best facial hair. Of course, the results were particularly noteworthy since Marx's mustache was a fake for most of his career.

Marx's trademark mustache was actually made of greasepaint, though he chose to grow a real mustache in later years rather than applying the makeup for performances.

Two of the three top finishers in the survey are fictional characters. The runners-up to Groucho Marx were the Dr. Seuss character the Lorax and the "Hunger Games" character Seneca Crane.

When it comes to the facial hair of everyday, real-life people, the survey found that North Americans overwhelmingly favor the mustache (72.8 percent) over any other kind of facial hair. Beards were a distant second (14.6 percent), followed by sideburns (6.8 percent) and "all of the above" (5.8 percent).

"Facial hair has moved in and out of fashion over the years and the historical record is full of shaggy characters," said D. Joshua Taylor, findmypast.com's lead genealogist.

Of course, you might want to stay away from the mustache, and any other facial hair for that matter, if you plan on running for public office.

Thomas Dewey was the last major party candidate for president of the United States to sport facial hair, losing the 1948 election to clean-shaven Harry S. Truman. A 1986 Boston Globe article even went so far as to argue that Dewey's mustache worked against him in the race.

With our condolences to Tom Selleck, the rest of the top 10 facial hair favorites:

4. Filmmaker and actor John Waters, known for his pencil-thin mustache

5. Ambrose Burnside, a Union Army general in the American Civil War whose facial hair style coined the word "sideburns"

6. Artist Salvador Dali

7. Funnyman Zach Galifianakis

8. Fictional anchorman Tom Tucker from "Family Guy"

9. Brian "Fear the Beard" Wilson, closing pitcher for the San Francisco Giants

10. Clark Gable, famed American actor

Should I let go? - Relationships, Dating, & Marriage

Q: I have been dating a guy for the past year and he recently called to let me know that he doesn?t think it?s working. A little info about why I feel torn:

This past summer he decided to take a leave of absence from work. There were no discussions (not that it?s my business), but we had been discussing moving in together, etc. I was a bit taken aback by his decision. Long story short, he went back to work, but was eventually let go. I have a little resentment toward him because of that, because he was in a great job and he has a child to consider (again not my child, not my issue) but I figured he would at least discuss it before making such a rash decision without thinking it through.

My own child is special needs and I?ve been dealing with some parenting issues lately that have taken up much of my time. I haven?t really seen the guy (I mean that in every way) in about two months, but we do the daily talks, etc. I get that he missed me and that I wasn?t spending as much time with him as I could have, but I needed to focus on the problem at hand.

I know I could have made an effort in seeing him, but between my issue with my child and thinking this guy did a dumb thing with his job, we just kind of grew apart. We started arguing over the most trivial things. I do love him and I know he loves me.

I still want to be with him and at least work on the issues, but he doesn?t. He doesn?t want a relationship but he wants me to remain ?close friends.? What the heck does that mean?

I?m really torn about this and wanted to ask if I should just consider it a wash and move on. Am I wrong for wanting to at least try?

? Torn, South of Boston

<div with this person, Torn. Please tell him that platonic friendship just isn't an option right now.

My gut tells me that he?s being honest about not wanting a relationship. Sure, he was angry that you disappeared on him, but all of this started when he made a quick (and very important) decision without taking you into consideration. You were just starting to make serious plans together and he went off on his own. You had every right to be upset.

You?re looking for some stability, but he?s just not capable. You mention that his choices (and his child) aren?t your business. It doesn?t sound like you guys were really on a path to a shared life.

My advice is to make your terms clear. You want a partner. If he?s not interested, you?re gone.

It?s time to allow yourself to go look for what you really want.

Readers? Is this a wash? Should he have talked to her about the job? Did she kill this by keeping him away for two months? What happened here? Help.

Monitor: More than 40,000 killed since start of Syria conflict

BEIRUT (Reuters) - More than 40,000 people have been killed in 20 months of conflict between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces and those fighting for his overthrow, a violence monitoring group said on Friday.

Rami Abdelrahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said about half the fatalities were civilians and the other half split about evenly between rebels and government soldiers.

"The figure is likely much higher as the rebels and the government lie about how many of their forces have died to make it look like they are winning," Abdelrahman told Reuters.

The British-based Observatory, which supports the opposition, has been collating the names of the dead since government security forces started shooting pro-democracy protesters in March 2011.

Army defectors and ordinary Syrians took up arms against Assad and a civil war has since taken hold.

Abdelrahman said he only counts deceased people whose deaths are confirmed by friends or relatives.

"There are 10,000 to 15,000 people who were arrested months ago so we can't use that number as we don't know if they are dead or alive," he said.

Reuters cannot independently confirm the figures due to severe reporting restrictions imposed by the Syrian authorities.

Will.i.am promises to turn your iPhone into a 14-megapixel 'genius-phone'

William promises to turn your iPhone into a 14megapixel 'geniusphone'

Not content with his deliberately undefined role at Intel, the main pulse behind the Black Eyed Peas is preparing for yet another incursion into the world of technology -- this time by launching a dedicated camera accessory for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 (and presumably the 4S, too). Will.i.am claims the device has "its own sensor and a better flash" and will "turn your smartphone into a genius-phone" by replacing the its native 5- or 8-megapixel camera module with one that churns out 14-megapixel images instead. The Telegraph reports that the add-on will be the first of a series of "i.am+" branded accessories that will launch on November 28th. No pricing has been revealed so far, but the range will be sold solely by Selfridges in London and -- much like Harrods with its own glam gadget exclusives -- that store isn't particularly known for bargains.

Three Common Video Marketing Myths | The Wooshii Blog

Even as Internet video explodes in popularity, there are many reasons that business owners cite when defending their decision not to utilise video marketing. Some of these excuses are reasonable and informed, whilst others are simply myths. Learning more about the true impact of video can help to break down these myths.

You Need Millions Of Views

Over two thirds of the videos on the Internet will never receive more than 1,000 views. However, you don?t need one million views to give your business a big boost with video. A few hundred views can still translate into dozens of new clients or sales, if you know how to target viewers that are interested and motivated.

It?s Too Expensive

With the proliferation of affordable recording and editing equipment, videographers are charging less than you might expect for their work. Small businesses can still get a quality marketing clip made if they only have a budget of a few hundred dollars.

It Has To Be Flashy

(AP) ? The children of a Houston-area couple killed during Thursday's massive interstate wreck in Texas say this year was the family's first Thanksgiving apart.

Authorities are investigating the chain-reaction wreck that involved more than 100 vehicles, many of which were left twisted on top of each other. The wreck killed the couple and injured at least 80 other people during heavy fog along Interstate 10 near Beaumont.

Twelve people remain hospitalized in serious condition, the Texas Department of Public Safety said in a statement Friday.

Vincent and Debbie Leggio were on their way to Louisiana for a gambling trip when their vehicle was caught in the wreck, sons V.J. and Richard Leggio told KHOU-TV.

"My parents are wonderful loving people ? all who knew them knew that," V.J. Leggio told the station. "They will be sorely missed ? sorely missed."

He said he worked with his father at the family business, Vinco Electric in Pearland, the Houston suburb where his parents lived.

"We had a good relationship," he added. "We got to spend time together golfing and fishing, and I'm so thankful for that now."

The wreck occurred southwest of Beaumont, on Texas' Gulf Coast. The heavy fog made it hard for law enforcement to determine at first how many wrecks had occurred.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a crash on the eastbound side of the highway led to other accidents in a dangerous chain reaction. There were multiple crashes on the other side of the highway as well.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Chuck Havard told KFDM-TV on Friday that investigators will work to determine whether any drivers will face charges.

Phone messages left Friday by The Associated Press for law enforcement officials weren't returned.
