I Fight Evil

Story:
The year was 2012 an April morning like any other Monday. People shuffled off to work, people let their dogs out to shit, and children trundled off to school. People first noticed the temperature increase - thirty degrees in an hour, then the heat lightning then nothing; reports were sketchy; a terrorist attack, aliens, an electromagnetic pulse. Speculation due to the communication break was rampant. Even if Washington was still around no one knew it. If you lived in DC, the rest of the country might as well been on the other side of the globe.

We know that within the first hour society, what we call civilization dissolved. Some looted, some prayed and some simply gave up and lay in the streets; waiting to die. The first week weeded those that grew soft from twenty-first century opulence away from the rest of the species. Estimates were over a million were dead; hospitals became just buildings to steal drugs as the police element was non-existent. Without orders, the military presence in every city became a standing militia; shoot-to-kill orders were issued by heads of bases for those that would try to breech their gates. These became pockets of society still clinging to hope.

Eleven days passed, and what was once important to our society faded to something more primal. It no longer mattered what college you went to or if you were part of a sub-committee for housing. The strong survived and the weak were harvested for resources. It was around this time when the first nuclear reactors started to meltdown. Without those maintenance workers the cores dried and cracked. Thousands more died, as pockets of radiation hung thick in the air.

It's hard to pinpoint when these things were thrown into the mix, suddenly it was no longer strong versus weak but a survival for the human race. I'm not sure if we have it in us to beat this it took a month to destroy what took three thousand years to create.

Personally, I'd say we?re fucked.

Radiation:
Some call it the Phantom Death, 'cause that's what it is. You can't see it, you can't hear it, you can't even smell it. It basically builds up in your system. You never feel it until it's too late. Radiation is the chief delayed effect of a nuclear explosion. It has long lifetimes (half-lives ranging from days to millennia). The primary source of these products is the debris left from fission reactions. A potentially significant secondary source is neutron capture by non-radioactive isotopes both within the bomb and in the outside environment.

The various types of mutant creatures that inhabit the world were mostly caused by radiation. Mutations in these creatures may have been caused by exposure to radiation from atomic bomb explosions themselves. Because ionizing radiation (the main type of radiation from an atomic explosion) consists of very energetic photons, it is capable of detaching electrons from molecules and atoms. This makes ionizing radiation extremely dangerous for living organisms because they can alter the creature's DNA, causing mutations i.e. tissues and organs do not grow normally. It is more likely their mutations were caused by the radioactive particles released by these explosions however. Radioactive isotopes in the environment can cause mutations if they are taken into an organism's body. For example, if a mammal ingested Ca-45, an unstable isotope of calcium, the body would regard it as normal calcium and deposit it in the creature's bones. Its accumulation there often leads to bone cancer.

This is where ghouls come from, massive radiation poisoning. Ghouls are victims of heavy radiation poisoning which erodes their skin and, paradoxically, greatly extends their life. Generally, massive exposure to radiation causes humans to die, however prolonged exposure seems to be capable of transforming people into ghouls. All ghouls are completely sterile. Furthermore, the ghoul transformation grants its subjects extremely long lives. Ghouls lose their intelligence over time and turn feral, though there are rare cases where this is not true. However, their extreme ugliness and physical frailty makes the life of a ghoul difficult at best. Ghouls are naturally immune to radiation, and, in fact, are also healed by it.

Above is just a bit of info relating to a post-apocalyptic roleplay I am working on. It takes place in an American city after a catastrophic event has changed the world as we know it. The story will revolve around a group of strangers who have banded together in this crisis with one goal in mind: survival. The group is compromised of random people from the local community, however they are still complete strangers to one another. Together, they have established a new home in a setting capable of defending them from the new world. Their dwelling safely and comfortably situates around fifty or so people. Their goal is to bring a bit of normality back into the lives of this chaotic world. Everyone has their own job and responsibility, our characters will be the hunters and gatherers of the group. At least this is the backstory I have concocted so far.

Everything is still a work in progress, there are crucial pieces of the roleplay that I have not settled on and much more that I have yet to discuss here. This is why I am looking for Co-GM(s) to help manage the work load and craft the world, as well as roleplayers interested in joining. So if you are interested, post saying so and please offer any thoughts, ideas, and/or suggestions.
